Every time I think of the future, “In The Year 2000” from Conan O’Brien’s old show runs through my head. I don’t know why, but it does. I’m thinking of the future, because the NaBloPoMo prompt for today is to write on whether I will be blogging 10 years from now. I think the bigger question is will blogging be happening at all.
My very first blog post was written in June of 2006. This was before Facebook was widespread and I was looking for away to keep family and friends updated on my happenings. I’ve blogged in fits and spurts since that time. If blogging is still around in 2024, I suspect I will still be writing a few words. However, I think something is going to come along to change that. Blogging is already less popular than it once was. I know I see fewer visitors than I did a few years ago. And I am just not expecting a resurgence in blogging any time soon.
Do I know what will replace blogging? No. I know some people have already dropped blogging in favor of Google+ posts, because interaction is so much higher. Maybe videos posted to YouTube (or another video platform yet to be created) will be it’s replacement. I know video tutorials are quickly replacing written ones. Maybe a different type of social media platform will arise to replace blogging as we know it. Technology changes so fast these days, who knows what other ideas may arise in the next 10 years that will lead us to a blogging replacement. I don’t have all the answers. Or any of the answers really. But I don’t think blogging as we know it will around 10 years from now. In which case, I will definitely not be blogging.
What do you think? Will 2024 see us moving on from blogging or will it still be with us. Leave me a comment below and let me know what you think the future holds.
I have several blogs now and my most recent post is about how I was attacked on Twitter for daring to have a blog. We seem to be a despised breed. I might be blogging in 2024 but I really hope I’ll be spending much less time on social media and less time sitting at the computer. I’ve semi-retired and now spend more time on the computer except no-one is paying me. It’s madness. I need to get out more!
I am sorry that happened to you Sharon. What a horrible response!
When I read your title, the first thought I had was the same question you posed, “Will blogging still be around in 10 years?” Everything changes so much–it might be a little still for recipes and for old folks (like me–I’ll be 49 in 10 years.) The older generation might want still the written blogs, but the younger generation is moving to youtube and instagram–visual, instant, and quick. So I should get into vlogging and podcasts, but I’m still trying to figure out blogging! And my house is never quiet enough to do the other mediums anyway.
