The last couple of years, I’ve noticed a Valentine’s Day push back from unexpected places. If you’ve just come out of a relationship or you haven’t had one in forever, I understand feeling negative toward’s Valentine’s Day. If you are in an unhappy relationship, that also makes sense. I used to have very mixed feelings towards Valentine’s day. I loved giving gifts to my family, but I longed to have a boyfriend/husband to share the day with. So I totally understand negativity toward’s Valentine’s Day under these circumstances. The pushback that is surprising to me is from people who I know have happy marriages and love doing things with their family.

I understand the point they are trying to make. Why wait for a special day to show your family you love them. I can’t say their sentiment is wrong. You definitely should not wait to show love. But why be against a holiday that celebrates love. One of the greatest gifts we can give or receive.

Love

If we’re against Valentine’s Day then why not be against a specific Christmas Day celebration, if you are a Christian? Should we not remember Christ every day? Is it different because it’s a Hallmark holiday? So are Mother’s and Father’s Days, but I don’t see people complaining we shouldn’t need a special day to honor our mothers and fathers.  I just don’t understand this pushback against a holiday to celebrate love.

In fact, I think we need to celebrate love more often.  It seems like we are living in a world with a short supply of this oh so important necessity. Give people a reason to focus on love a lot more often. Yes, we should be showing love our family and friends every day.  There is no doubt that this is much needed.  And if we have an annual holiday that reminds us of the importance of showing love all year round, is that really so bad?  I don’t think so.

I want to take a moment to wish everyone reading this blog a very happy celebration of love.  I especially want to tell my wonderful hubby that I love him.  Not that I don’t tell him every day, but today I am going to do it a little more publicly.  David, I love you!!
