There is a lot of talk right now about the fact that Marvel does not include Black Widow in their action figure pack for Target. Okay, really she is left out of almost all toy creation when it comes to Avengers toys. I think that’s wrong. She needs to be included. Black Widow is an Avenger and an important part of the team. (I’d like to see Hawkeye included as well. We learned a lot more about Clint Barton (Hawkeye) in the latest Avengers yet they left him out as well.) If I buy a toy pack, it will be one that includes ALL of the Avengers.
Included in this discussion is the need for a Black Widow movie. I think that’s a great idea. I know she has been in several of the movies for other characters, but she deserves a breakout movie. Black Widow is a great character and it would be an excellent movie. I think a great idea would be for a Black Widow/Hawkeye movie. They obviously have a much different relationship than any of the other Avengers have with each other. I see a great movie here with two characters on very equal footing. I could also go for separate movies for Black Widow and Hawkeye. Although I am partial to the movie idea that features both characters. But let me tell you what I don’t want.
What I don’t want is a Black Widow movie made for women. I recently read a discussion on Facebook about an article discussing an email between the CEO of Marvel and the CEO of Sony Pictures. To be honest, I didn’t care much for the article. I felt it was making suppositions based on too little information. The discussion of the article indicated that what we needed was more movies created with women in mind. That is definitely not where I want the Black Widow movie to go. All we need is Black Widow running down the street in high heels wearing pink leather trying to catch a bad guy and not smear her mascara at the same time. I am fairly certain that this SNL skit from Saturday illustrates exactly what kind of movie we’d get when they try to make female superhero movie for women.
This is not a movie I want to see. I want to see a great superhero movie that focuses on Black Widow. I don’t want a movie that some Hollywood executive think that women want to see. Because let’s be honest, it’s probably not a movie that female superhero fans actually want. We want good action. We want good dialogue. We want Black Widow to be featured. We do not want Black Widow being dumbed down because that’s what Hollywood thinks women want.
Marvel, I want to see a great movie about Black Widow. A great movie that all superhero fans want to see. I don’t want to see some new version of Black Widow that you think women want to see. We don’t.
